Bonner in the Field: Mikayla Montgomery at Storm Harbor!

Storm Harbor is an equine-assisted facility for a variety of people of all ages, many with cognitive, physical, emotional and social disabilities. The organization offers many programs such as schools, day programs, disabled veterans, and disability programs.

Mikayla finds that as a recreational therapy major, her placement at Storm harbor has been very beneficial to her professional growth. It has helped her feel more comfortable working with animals and a variety of clients. This prepares her for her future career while also bettering her time management skills and adaptability to new environments, clients and animal behaviors.

She works directly with the animals, most often the horses, the clients, and the volunteers at Storm Harbor. She leads the grooming sessions with the clients as well as training the student volunteers about the organization and the duties involved.

Mikayla has found joy in working with the clients each week, forming relationships, watching their development, progress and seeing them improve.
